Mazda 3

Have a 2012 Mazda 3 hatchback 2.0. Planning on putting a turbo on it and making it AWD. I see there are a lot of issues with making it turbocharged but I'm willing to try.

It would cost you a heck of a lot less money and time if you were to simply sell your current car and buy a MazdaSpeed3 instead.

Yeah I get that but I really don't want to have this car as my manual. I'm getting an mx5 and I want this one to be my automatic. I know its going to be a lot of money but when im done with it it would have been all worth it.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a few comments you probably don't want to hear:
  • Adding forced induction to your 2.0 liter SkyActiv engine will be extremely difficult given the engine's very high compression ratio.
  • Said another way, any forced induction application (of which there are exactly zero turbocharging kits on the market) will likely yield very little in reliable power.
  • If, and this is a HUGE "if", you figure out a way to significantly increase the power of your engine, you will destroy your automatic transmission in very short order; it simply wasn't designed to take much more power than your engine already produces.
  • Adding AWD to your car will be all but impossible.
  • Making the changes you are proposing will most likely cost well over $10,000.
  • If you want a turbocharged AWD hatchback with an automatic transmission, I would recommend you sell your car and then look into a Subaru or an Audi.

By all means I know it will be difficult. I understand I will have to lower the compression ratio and I have done my research on how to do that. I didn't think much about the transmission but if I do switch it to AWD I will be swapping out the old transmission anyways. Also I have looked up Mazda 3 AWD cars and there have been a couple people to do it but it was on the speed3. Now I don't know how they did it exactly but its not impossible. Plus Mazda did make the 2.5T skyactiv engine last year in the CX9 with AWD. That was my other option, maybe swapping that into my car but I feel that would be more expensive then what I have planned now.

Man I'm all for someone doing what people say can't be done. As an enthusiast, sometimes you want to be sadistic to your self just so you can learn to do something and make your own creation. Some people will make all kinds of mean and rude statements because they don't understand why you would want to do something that there isn't a kit for. You CAN turbo ANYTHING with the right supporting changes to the internals. The DISI motor will aid in decreasing the temp in the cylinders to alleviate knock. You CAN go AWD it will cost money. But you will learn so much. And if and when you follow through and complete your vision, everyone, of the naysayers will bite their tongue and ask for a walkthrough...With pics.

Good luck to you. There is a ton of vital information not just on here but ANY website related to forced induction and engine modification. An engine is an engine is an engine.

A few comments:
  • The OP does not have a DISI engine, he has a SkyActiv.
  • The automatic transmission will not stand up to the beating from a breathed on engine, and it won't lend itself to an AWD application either, so it will need to be swapped out for some other unit.
  • The suspension and undercarriage will need to be completely swapped out.
  • The electricals to control the engine/transmission system will need to be completely rewritten from a code perspective.
  • Last but not least, there will be a rather significant amount of fab work required to make it all work
Am I a naysayer? Yes. If he actually achieves his stated goals I still won't bite my tongue. Why? Because the massive amount of money spent will on the project be pissed down the toilet because the car will be utterly worthless.

Yes, it's true that there are people out there who do truly amazing things with vehicles, and can accomplish just about anything they decide to do.
But none of those guys ever show up on a forum asking for opinions.
