C30 reliability

Because existing sources of vehicle reliability information left much to be desired, in late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research at TrueDelta.com. TrueDelta reports absolute stats like "trips to the shop" that make the differences between cars much clearer. Results are updated four times a year, so it's possible to provide reliability information on new models like the C30 quickly--if enough owners sign up quickly. Also, any significant changes in a model's reliability become apparent quickly.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, panel members will receive full access to the results for free.

We've updated the results for the C30 to include owner experiences through the end of June 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009: 46

2008: 54

Both are about average.

These cars are of course young, and it remains to be seen how they'll fare as they age. With prompt quarterly updates, we'll track them closely. The more participants we have, the better the information we can provide.

We've updated the results for the C30 to include owner experiences through the end of March 31, 2010. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009: 39, about average, but very close to "better than average"

2008: 26, better than average

Other sources of car reliability information won't cover the more recent months until the summer or even fall of next year.

In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009: 33

2008: 24

Both are now better than average, and better than other Volvos.
